Why Newman?
Discover the incredible graces and gifts that the Newman club has poured into the lives of both current students and alumni, fostering holiness, joy, and growth within a supportive community that inspires learning and purpose!
"If you’re thinking about going to a Newman event: do it.!There is no threshold of faith that you need to have to be fully welcomed by this incredible, welcoming, and fun community of CMU students who are striving for goodness. Attending my first Newman Night was a pivotal point for me, and coming to know and love Jesus more deeply has been the most meaningful thing I’ve done in college. "

"I never thought students would be able to pursue authentic Christian community, but this club has introduced me to so many others seeking Christ and wanting Him to reign in their hearts and lives. This community is the salt and light of my Carnegie Mellon experience, and it has formed me to pursue Christ and equipped me to invite others to Him through Bible study, too many shared meals to count, and fantastic retreat weekends."

"The Oratory/Newman Club was really the only source for Catholic friends to peer pressure me into piety and brought me back to Confession. They also set my standards really high for liturgy as well as spiritual direction so I will annoy Offices of Divine Worship for years to come. For advice, do not let practices or anything you developed while with the Newman Club to fall away; persevere in doing them in your home and your home parish, even if it's annoying. In doing so you evangelize your home"

"Traveling across the world to CMU from Singapore, I was initially concerned over how my newfound faith life would fare in an unknown place. The CMU Newman Club has been a blessing in providing a community of believers that support me in my walk with Christ. Through bible studies, discipleship, mass on campus, chit chats, and of course the awesome free food, come witness the fullness of life in our community!"

"The CMU Newman Club was an amazing outlet and community for me during college. I grew in my faith through Bible studies; I had a supportive group of other students and missionaries around me when I stumbled; and I made amazing friends who I still talk to today! My freshman year Bible study leader and I have remained friends for over 6 years now, despite the fact that we only overlapped in school for one year :)"

"Newman events, such as Newman nights, the cultural potluck, the Rome pilgrimage and retreats, have been highlights of my time at CMU. Through these events, I’ve forged virtuous friendships with genuine, intelligent and fun students and missionaries! I cannot imagine my time at CMU without this community."

"The Newman Club has been foundational in my journey of discovering and following Christ as a convert. It provided me with a community I never thought I’d find and blessed me with beautiful friendships I could never have imagined—among them, my best friends and my soon-to-be Godmother. I can’t imagine where I’d be today without this incredible group, and truthfully, I’d never want to find out."

"My first interaction with the CMU Catholic Newman Club was when a priest (our beloved Fr. Thomas) was tabled in the center of campus answering questions, while club members were handing out Rita’s Shaved Ice. Silly ol’ me spent most of the event too nervous to introduce myself or ask questions. But as the event wrapped up and I was about to leave, everyone quickly came over to introduce themselves and to get to know me. Little did I know, this was exactly what the club was all about: enthusiastically loving everyone and creating a welcoming environment where students could grow together in communion with one another and with God."

"The CMU Newman club has shown me what it means to truly live out the Catholic faith. The Newman club is filled with so many great people who are all amazing witnesses to Gods love. I am so glad that I’ve been a part of this community throughout my college experience! "

"The Newman Club has actually been the greatest blessing of my college experience. The first person that I met moving into my college dorm was a FOCUS missionary who put my foot in the door of a life long journey of faith. Through this experience, I’ve transformed my relationship with Jesus Christ, grown in virtue, humility, and love, and formed lifelong friendships within the Newman community. Every person you meet at Newman is sure to be a witness of Christ and His love! "
